A process of delivering power to a thermally adjustable multi-mode surgical instrument comprising:
selecting a surgical instrument having a tip;
delivering a first oscillating signal to a conductor disposed on the surgical instrument, the conductor having a ferromagnetic coating covering a portion thereof, wherein the ferromagnetic coating is sufficiently thin that the ferromagnetic coating will not fracture when heated and then immersed in liquid, the conductor extending through the entire ferromagnetic coating, and wherein delivering the first oscillating signal to the conductor causes direct heating of the ferromagnetic coating to a temperature sufficient to treat tissue; and
delivering a second oscillating signal to the surgical instrument to cause ultrasonic vibrations in the tip.
