The Jakarta - Surabaya section (720 km) of the Indonesian Railways is an important trunk line traversing the Java Island from west to east.
At present, the Jakarta Kota-Bekasi section (26km) is the only section of this trunk line that is electrified ; the other sections have diesel locomotives running on them.
In the long term, the need of the non-electrified section’s traffic volume is expected to exceed existing traffic-capacity.
Furthermore, since Indonesia depends on petroleum for her consumption of energy, the electrification of these sections is essential from the view point of energy saving.
A feasibility study on the electrification of the Jakarta - Surabaya section was conducted several years ago, and now a new study to cope with the present conditions is desired by the concerned authorities of Indonesia.
