There is known groundwater contamination by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at the site. Review of the 2013 Phase I report, Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), Bureau of Environmental Remediation Identified Sites List Information, and the EDR report indicates that the site is listed on the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Information System (CERCLIS) website with a No further Remedial Action Planned (NFRAP) and on the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Corrective Action Sites (CORRACTS) database. Shallow groundwater (3.3-6.0 m bgs) was impacted with VOCs as a result of leakage from the closed landfill located on the main plant area eastern parcel. According to facility personnel, DuPont has management responsibility for the closed landfills at the site. There is limited information regarding this closed and capped landfill (Landfill #3). DuPont is also listed as responsible for the remediation. DuPont is the listed as having investigated the extent of the contamination. A RCRA Facility Assessment (RFA) was completed in 1990, and in 1992, the site was assigned a medium corrective action priority. In 1988, the site underwent a financial records review, and the clean up commenced in 1995. In 2000 through 2008, the site underwent groundwater monitoring evaluation. As of March 2015, the site is listed in the operation and maintenance inspection phase.
A copy of the remediation report was not available for Ramboll Environ’s review. Records regarding the corrective action were requested from the KDHE, but have not yet been received.
Reasonable Case (RC) and Reasonable Worst Case (RWC) – Assumes that DuPont continues responsibility for the management and remediation of the former landfills.
