Today, it seems that there are from 6000 to 7000 languages spoken in the world. However, the exact living number of languages spoken now is not known, because it is difficult to define ones as whether languages or dialects. Moreover, there are the languages which are going to disappear, so it is hard to count living languages. Now that globalization has progressed, endangered languages have been attracting attention. Many researchers have estimated the number of both living and endangered languages. If one language is disappeared, what programs will be happened? When one language extinct problems related human culture and society occur. Languages have become symbol of unique view of the world and their sense of values in the community where the language is spoken. In addition, the language is not only to communicate each other but also to show identity of people. In other words, it means losing valuable legacy of human forever. In order to protect minority languages, some projects such as language planning and heritage language education have taken place in the world.
In 2010, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced third edition of “Atlas of the World’s Language in Danger” which shows where and what languages are endangered today. It is said that about half of 6000 languages spoken today will disappeared by the end of this century. Then, language planning has been conducted by the government or ethnic group. Language planning can be divided into three; corpus planning, status planning and acquisition planning. Corpus planning aims to standardize language including grammar, vocabulary and dictionary in the community. They are also corpus planning to effort exclusion of foreign languages and linguistic prism. The first stage of corpus planning is to develop a writing system for the language which did not have a writing system. Status planning aims the language gets social status in the community of the language. It needs to keep using the language in a specific range and expand the new range of language.
