In biology, a copy of an organism, a cell, or a complex molecule (or a portion of a complex molecule--such as a gene). The word is also sometimes used to refer to a group of such replicas. An organism is commonly said to be a clone if it is derived from another organism by an asexual (nonsexual) reproductive or biotechnological process and is genetically the same, or virtually the same, as the "parent" organism. The ancient practice of using cuttings from a plant to grow new plants is a form of cloning. The English word clone comes from the Greek klon, which means "twig."
